So what are no wake zones and what purpose do they serve?

No wake zones limit the speed boaters can travel (headway speed) in certain areas in order to help reduce erosion and protect lake wildlife, like the loons on Squam. It also helps ensure the safety of other boaters.

On Squam Lake in New Hampshire there are several no wake zones, including:

  • The Squam River in Holderness between the southerly end of the boathouse in Little Squam Lake near the Holderness bridge and the light buoy at the lower or westerly end of Squam Lake
  • The area extending from the Sandwich Town Beach 300 feet to the southern tip of Camp Hale on Squam Lake
  • The channel between Bowman Island and Moon Island
  • The channel between Potato Island and Finisterre Point (Livermore Cove)
  • From June 15 to Sept. 15, on Sunday between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. the channel between Chocorua Island, also known as Church Island at light 5 and Merrill Island at light 6
  • Rattlesnake Cove in the town of Sandwich, NH
  • Squaw Cove in the town of Sandwich, NH

In addition, there is a 10 MPH limit for Bean Cove and Nichols Cove. The Squam River in Ashland is also a no wake zone.
